FIXING ME FIRST: THE NECESSITY OF DISCIPLING SELF
WEEK 1: YOU CAN CHANGE BIBLICALLY
LESSON 1: THE NEED FOR SELF-CORRECTION

Main Theme: God uses honest self-examination to begin real spiritual change.
Key Truth: Spiritual growth begins when believers are willing to examine themselves honestly before God.
Scripture Reading: Psalm 139:23–24; Proverbs 28:13; James 1:22–25
Introduction: Just as a doctor cannot heal a patient who refuses to admit symptoms, God’s healing work begins when we acknowledge our spiritual condition.
Bible Discovery Questions: Answer directly from Scripture. Write references where possible.

  1. According to Psalm 139:23, who initiates the deepest heart-examination?

  2. What does David ask God to reveal in Psalm 139:24?

  3. What two responses to sin are contrasted in Proverbs 28:13?

  4. What promise is given to the one who confesses sin?

  5. How does James define self-deception in James 1:22?

  6. What illustration does James use in verses 23–24?

  7. What happens to the one who forgets what the Word reveals?

  8. What blessing is promised in James 1:25?

  9. Why is hearing alone insufficient for spiritual growth?

  10. What prevents honest self-confrontation in the believer’s life?

Personal Reflection: These questions are for private consideration. Sharing is optional.

  • What is one area where you tend to avoid self-examination?

  • Pray Psalm 139:23–24 in your own words.

Group Discussion: Be ready to discuss the following topics with Scripture-based answers.

  • Why is self-confrontation often resisted?

  • How can a small group encourage biblical honesty without condemnation?

Weekly Practice: Complete this assignment before the next meeting.

Spend five minutes each day asking God to reveal attitudes or behaviors that need correction. If God reveals something to you, search the Scriptures to see what He wants you to do.
